The Debut

Filed under: Gardening — Susan @ 5:52 pm

Most of the veggies that I planted this growing season have now made their debut. We will indeed have quite a smorgasbord of vegetables this year. I probably even have enough for doing some bartering (stuff I didn’t grow or some fancy harvesting) and the food bank as well. We are just now enjoying fresh herbs and rhubarb. Any day soon it will be Swiss Chard, Spinach and Radishes.
I have had FiddleHeads almost every evening for dinner for the last week. I went on a “Stalking the Edible Wild” hike last Saturday and came across even more Fiddleheads than my last picking session. There are a lot of Fiddleheads in the freezer to share with out of town guests that would like to share in the pleasure of eating them with me.

Yoga

Filed under: Exercise — Susan @ 5:40 pm

Well I did it again, one too many of some pose. My lower back is right out. It was either when I did some pose that I am to old to be doing (but got praise from others in the class for attempting it) or one too many “Praying Bridge” or one too many head stands maybe all combined. I had such a great time in last Friday’s class that I felt that I could do more and better this Friday – and yes – I do practise through the week – a lot – Pilates too!
Bob and I were suppose to go to the driving range and hit a couple of buckets of balls this afternoon but no could do. I was looking forward to that as Bob had this great plan of monitoring how I use each club for distant – kind of like a lesson. Next Friday I guess and yes I will be going to the chiropractor, then Pilates and a Yoga class on Friday before the driving range.

Yoga vs Pilates

Filed under: Exercise — Susan @ 9:04 am

I signed up for Yoga classes three weeks ago. One of the poses just didn’t work for me and I really wrecked my neck. Luckily, I have a great chiropractor and she was able to snap me back into place but my neck still hurts and I am still icing it. Any ways, turns out my chiropractor is not a Yoga fan and suggested I stick to the the Pilates which I have accepted her advice. I do practise the Yoga poses that I did enjoy along with the Pilates almost everyday – I look forward to each day and really love it! I also meditate for 31 minutes to a meditation CD that my Yoga/Pilates instuctor created – I put my head set on and so what I hear is right in my brain! Wow, each time I listen to it I hear new things – it is truly incredible and I feel so rejuventated after it – I recommend the meditation!

Fiddlheads

Filed under: Food for thought — Susan @ 8:45 am

What a day fiddlehead picking was yesterday. I was like a kid in a candy store – there are just so many. Sheryle and I went with our dogs, Bailey and Ebony. When we got to “our” fiddlehead picking spot, low and behold, two other women and four other dogs were there snooping around. We decided just to put out our elbows and just burst in and start picking. One of the other dogs came over to sniff me and I told the dog to go away – well of course Bailey got in there like a bat out of hell and ran that dog off. It turns out the two other women were looking for nettle and quickly left because Bailey made the one dog most unwelcomed. We got some many fiddleheads and there are still lots left to be picked.
Fiddleheads are a real pain in the butt to clean but worth the effort. So I cleaned a large handful, soaked them in very salty water for about an hour (to help get rid of little parasites), changed the water and boiled them hard for 12 minutes (I suggest boiling them for a little less time – 10 minutes). I served them with garlic butter since we were having Fillet and Lobster tails for dinner – the fiddleheads were my favourite part of the meal. If you come over in the next couple of days – I will cook some up for you!
