2010 Garlic

Filed under: Gardening — Susan @ 4:08 pm

My garlic is up that I planted last fall by about four inches.  I am so excited.  I hope to sell some of it this year if it is successful and as far as know there should not be any reason for it not to be ~ unless of course Mother Nature decides to do something drastic weather wise.  I planted close to 500 bulbs so that is a fair amount to start with.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Filed under: Books — Susan @ 3:59 pm

I just finished an audio book called, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein.  It is about a dog named Enzo who knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul, who loves to watch TV and videos (especially about car racing) and is deeply devoted to his master, race car driver Denny Swift.  This book had me laughing out loud, very angry and even a little disgusted a few times.   It was a terrific listen!

This book made me wonder what goes on in Bailey’s mind.

An Embarrassment of Mangoes ~ A caribbean Interlude

Filed under: Books — Susan @ 12:51 pm

I wrote a blog a few weeks back about my friend Sieja and how she is about to embark upon her new life as a cruiser with her partner, John.  I read a book last weekend called An Embarrassment of Mangoes ~ A Caribbean Interlude by Ann Vanderhoof.  Bob saw that I was enjoying the book so much that he read it him self.  He just finished it and handed it to me and said, “Thank you for turning me on to such a lovely book.”

What I liked most about the book is that Ann invites you to join her and her husband, Steve, on their first Caribbean cruise.  Since Bob and I are not going to play in the sun any where this winter ~ this was the perfect book to read ~ I have now had my winter-go-get-some-sun vacation.

I am however a little concerned about Sieja and John and how much is really involved with cruising (so is Bob).  So Sieja if you read this blog please let me know that all is well and I highly recommend that you read this book that I just blogged about!

Ann Vanderhoof also has a website and blog so I am now going to go send her a little blog about her wonderful book and how much fun I had reading it!

Ava’s first bath in her tub

Filed under: Family — Susan @ 12:33 pm

what-are-you-doing-momI  saw Ava have her first bath in her baby tub!  I have read a couple of baby books because I never had any babies on my own.  I remember one book saying that everything single thing is a brand new experience (duh ya!) for each baby and they are not sure if they like it or not and need to cry or not.  When Rheanna first started to to bath Ava, well the look on Ava’s face was priceless with her eyes wide opened and not quite sure if this was a good thing or not.

Her face then said, “I think that I like this”

Finally her face said, “I love you Mom!”i-love-you-mom

It was beautiful to witness this non-monumental event.

Convention

Filed under: Uncategorized — Susan @ 4:45 pm

I went to my very first convention this past week.  I learnt so much.    This was a PPWC convention and the rules were very strict.  I was there as an observer which meant I could only watch and listen and absorb . . . I learnt so much.  I am not sure if I will ever be a delegate but I certainly would like to get more involve in my local.

A Great Grandmother

Grama Susan
Susan has been a Stepmother to Lindsay and Rheanna with an enduring compassion. Being a Stepmother is one of the most difficult family order’s that can be dealt to a person, especially when the Father is hellbent on the fact that his daughters are perfect in every way. I could go on forever to tell of how remarkable a person Susan is, and to tell you of how she is not only a Mother to “The Girls” but also their friend and confidant, but, I’d rather you see the picture of Susan feeding her little Ava. I know Rheanna had this moment in her dreams to share with Susan. It’s been a journey in our family, a great journey, and it keeps getting better!

Peanut chicken soup

Filed under: Recipes — Susan @ 6:51 pm

I love soup . . .  of all kinds so I am always looking for new funky recipes.  allrecipes.com  is my favourite site for finding just about anything that I want with the ingredients that I have at hand or even something a little more adventerous . . . like peanut chicken soup.  Key allrecipes.com into your search engine and hopefully it will be right there for you see and then make.

I made a few adjustments.  I used my leftover turkey breast from last Christmas and homemade turkey stock from the same event (instead of chicken and chicken broth), I didn’t use potatoes because I am potato-ed out now (I grew way too many potatoes this year and we often have potatoes some how with our meal . . enough already . . . I done with the potatoes!).  About five minutes before I was about to serve the soup I added enough Oriental style egg noodles to the soup along with the parsley.  It worked out just lovely.   How I would tweak this recipe is add a little something hot like a wee bit of smokey chipotle powder or even just chili peppers, chunky peanut butter rather than smooth for texture and also fresh cilantro rather than fresh parsley.  A nice garnish would be some chopped peanuts on top.  I did serve this with a fresh baked baguette but I think I would have preferred it with an Oriental rice paper wrap with crunchy veggies.   Peanut Turkey Soup ~ enjoy ~ I loved it!  Bob liked it too!

NASA & a Horse’s Ass

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bob @ 5:38 pm

roman-chario1Back in Roman times transportation was via horse and cart or horse and chariot. It was determined that it was best to have the wheels set apart at 4’8-1/2″. The reason for this was because when two horses pulled the cart, the wheels left ruts in the muddy streets and so the horses’ asses were measured and it was felt it best to have the horses be able to walk in between these ruts.
After time, somone came up with the idea of moving traffic via rail. Converting the carts to rail traffic was easy because they made the rails to accomodate the new wheels required to adapt to the old carts. It was set at 4′ 8-1/2″.
This standard is used by most of the world. China, Europe and North America, as well as others, but not most of Africa.
When NASA needed to build it’s booster rockets to assist it’s flights. they were built by a company who had to ship them by rail to the launch pad. Bet this is starting to come together for you now eh? Well you’re wrong….The rails dimensions we’re just a part of the engineering that went into play of the width of the booster rockets. While the booster rockets we’re being transferred to the launch site they had to go through a tunnel. That tunnel was made wide enough to handle regular traffic freight, as was the norm worldwide based on height for clearance and width of the tracks. NASA engineers took that into account when designing the booster rockets so they would fit through the tunnel. Imagine placing yourself in the Challenger knowing that the components were built by the lowest bidder, and a horse’s ass!

ADAM

Filed under: Entertainment — Susan @ 12:33 pm

I started to watch the movie, ADAM, last night but fell asleep a third of the way into it.  So still being sick with my cold and leg I decided to watch it this morning.  It is a very good movie.  It is probably a B movie but just the same, it is very good.  I recommend it.

It is about a young man that suffers from a type of slight autism and how he manages in this world.  In the opening scene it is already known that his father (care giver) has just passed away.  His mother had passed away when he was a young boy.  He meets a woman and their relationship develops in spite of obstacles.  I am not going to tell you anymore except that is isn’t a sappy romance.

An Addiction

Filed under: Entertainment — Susan @ 3:33 pm

I am addicted to Audio books.  It seems that I can’t do my housework  or cook or do some other kind of project (that doesn’t require reading or conversing) with out my head set on listening to an audio book.  I listen to about two a week unless it is huge like The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.  Becky, who I work with, recommended it to me ~ she said it is one of her all time favourite books.  I finally got it last week from the library.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and I recommend it.  It is about four Americian sisters, their mother and their reverend father and growing up in Africa.  This book tells you lots about Africa and its people with a bit of politics thrown in and the sisters and how they cope with moving from USA to Africa.
